The #GrouponU Blog is back for 2016! We’ll regularly feature a Groupon intern or recent college grad telling you about their experience tackling challenging problems and working with our teams.
Who are you?
My name is Jenny Cheng and I’m a rising senior in Computer Science at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I’m an SDE intern on the Mobile iOS Engagement & Conversion team in the Palo Alto office.
What does your team do?
My team works on the part of the Groupon app where users can engage with an individual deal and view the specific details, which are then converted from browsing to purchasing. We make new features, fix bugs, and work alongside the Search and Discovery and QA teams.
What do you do?
Before I came to Groupon, I didn’t have any experience whatsoever with iOS, let alone mobile programming. I had never even worked on a Mac before! To top it off, I’ve only ever had Android phones. In the two months that I’ve been here, I’ve definitely learned a lot (to say the least). I’ve picked up Swift and Objective-C and learned about how mobile development works, and how different it is from web.
So far, I’ve fixed UI bugs, added functionality for a new universal link for the app, and implemented UI for a new feature that soon, I’ll be able to point out on all local deal pages! I’m still learning a lot about iOS, but I think I’ve definitely come a long way.
What do you do at Groupon outside of work?
In June, Groupon had their annual Volunteer-a-thon, where all employees are encouraged to get out of the office and spend a few hours giving back. I got to help save the bay with environmental work and help feed those in need by sorting food at Second Harvest Food Bank.
Aside from that, we’ve also had a lot of company and intern events, such as a cruise for the whole mobile team, a company picnic, board game nights, bubble soccer, and a cooking class! It’s been a lot of fun, and I’m excited for the rest of the summer!
What do you like about Groupon?
I really like the culture here – everyone is nice and very helpful, and the work-life balance is great. I also love that the office is dog friendly and has a froyo machine with different flavors everyday – who could ask for more? Other than that, I like that it’s a friendly and open environment, and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
