Divisional Sales Manager
What’s your favorite conference room?
Luke wins the title of “Most Star Wars Mentions in an Employee Profile”—which we’re sure he’ll appreciate very much.
Tell us about your job! What do you do? What do you love about it?
I am a Divisional Sales Manager for Merchant Development within the Restaurants vertical. My team consists of arguably some of the most self-motivated people at Groupon. It is not easy most days, but the group of people I work with is special. The reps on my team, our leadership, and the department as a whole—it’s the people who make the challenges worthwhile.
What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve worked on?
Spearheading the LivingSocial integration Sales Plan prior to the formal merger of LivingSocial. From implementing the training with the sales reps to coordinating with all the other departments involved – getting everyone on the same page and continuing momentum was difficult. Ultimately, it was one of the best projects I worked on. I learned so much and accomplished the goal we set out to achieve.
How does your work impact Groupon’s mission of building the daily habit in local commerce?
I firmly believe that almost all restaurants can use Groupon to attract additional customers, which ultimately translates into more revenue for their business. There are very few restaurants out there that are busy 100% of the time. We can help fill the empty seats and create a positive return on a business’s investment.
Have you won any awards during your time here?
I won the Merchant Development Groupon Green Award in 2017 for Respect, Integrity, and Inclusion.
What do your parents think you do?
My grandmother would cut out articles in the local paper about Groupon, mail them to me, thinking I printed coupons for a living.
What’d you do before Groupon? How’d you get here?
I sold legal advertising at a start-up with seven other people in an office the size of a studio apartment. It was a grind, making upwards of 125 calls a day, and we would put clauses in to guarantee a client. When I heard about Groupon, and that businesses only pay for the customers we deliver, it made complete sense to me.
What are your hobbies?
I’m a big Star Wars fan. I’ve had two separate teams pick the name “Team Skywalker” and I’m looking forward to all the new movies that are coming out.
What’s your favorite local business?
Cafe Marie Jeanne in Humboldt Park.
Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I’ve owned three cars in my life, and all of them have been totaled without me being in them. Two of the cars were hit while they were parked, and the third was totaled in a flood. It was not a great day finding my car submerged in water. Since I have terrible luck with cars, I do not own one at the moment.
What’s your favorite Groupon memory?
My first month at Groupon we had a West Coast party. We dubbed a King and Queen of the West Region. It ended up with a dance party and an employee to be left nameless taking over the dance floor. This individual had dance moves that rival “The Star Wars Kid.” It was quite the introduction to Groupon.
Who or what inspires you?
The people at Groupon. My current and former reps. Mentors, RSDs, RVPs, and other managers who have guided me along the way. I learn so much from the people I work with every day.
What was your first impression of Groupon as an employer?
There were way too many energy drinks in the office. We had some brand I’d never heard and they were everywhere! But seriously, the atmosphere was energizing; everyone wanted to be at work, which was unique in comparison to my previous jobs.
