The best way to engage with a local business owner? Kolby shares the secret to his sales success.

What’s your favorite Groupon memory? 

Honestly, the best memory I have was walking into the building for the first time for my interview! I had no idea what to expect, I was just hoping that everything turned out right. Walking into the office one of my first thoughts were, “Wow, no one looks stressed out. It’s such a relaxed environment.” And here I am walking in with a whole suit on, ha!

Tell us about your job! What do you do? What do you love about it? What does a typical day look like?

I get the opportunity to challenge myself every day and find interesting ways to get business owners engaged. I love talking to people and piquing their interest. I get the opportunity to work with our Things To Do businesses: amusement parks, golf courses, bowling alleys, wineries…all the places that I would love to go to and explore. I love learning about what drives businesses and I get to learn a lot about why the owners even got into their industry. In my job, I get to the bottom of business problems and figure out what their needs are while still trying to help them achieve their goals for the business. I do this by listening, which is my strongest approach to sales. My secret to success is not talking over them and giving them the ability to be heard.

What was your first impression of Groupon as an employer?

I definitely thought, “This could be an awesome career!” (And I was right so far!)

How does your work impact Groupon’s mission of building the daily habit in local commerce?

Pumping the opportunity for growth into any business is a plus. Keeping these businesses going is huge!

Describe the proudest moment you’ve had at Groupon.

I am most proud of the opportunity to sit amongst others who have been here for many years and who has made a lot of money; I learn a ton from these individuals. Hearing industry knowledge and things they may have heard from a previous business that is in the same field is always helpful. They help me grow because knowledge is power and the more I can learn, the more powerful my sales process is. For example, for the longest time, I had a hard time closing golf courses. But by listening to others and asking questions, I was able to use so much of what I learned and I ended up closing a really nice golf course for my first golf close! We all have the same opportunity to grow, we just have to put in the work.

Have you won any awards? 

I won a High Five award and a few Representative of the Week awards.

Your role probably exists at other companies aside from Groupon…so what makes your role at Groupon unique? 

The most unique part of Groupon for me is that this position does not feel like a job. I come in every day and I am working towards a goal in my career. At first, the sales process was challenging because I was used to outbound sales, where I knew how to peak off businesses calling me. Having to completely get someone to re-engage and listen to you is fun and challenging when you can win at that!

Where were you before you joined Groupon? How did you get here?

I worked at Mercedes Benz. I took a leap of faith and filled out an application for Groupon. The atmosphere was one of the biggest pluses for me. Also, doing sales without the hassle or stress of being micromanaged. At Groupon, they encourage your success, want you to close, and, at the end of the day, have fun while working.

What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve worked on?

My organization: it is something I am continuously working on. And making sure I set myself up in the best way possible for success!

Who inspires you?

My kids inspire me. Their smiles and ambition to learn every day open up my eyes to learn more.

What do your parents (or children!) think you do?

“So you just sit and play on your phone on Groupon?” That’s what they asked.

You probably have a life outside Groupon; what are you up to when you’re not at work? What are your hobbies?

I am usually at home figuring out the best way to keep the family happy! I love paintball, basketball, and hanging out with my wife and two kids.
